This veneration of the visual experience forms the very matrix of Indian Culture, from where arises such splendid diversity of region, faith and community.
The value of ornamentation is not prinicipally aesthetic, although this, too, is important. Its primary purpose is to link function, spirit and form in a well balanced, holistic context for daily life. In the words of Ananda K. Coomaraswamy:

"The beauty of anything unadorned is not increased by ornament, but made more effective by it ... a thing is ritually transformed and made to function spiritually as well as physically."
