This is a slide show highlighting photos both of recent times and eary 20th century of Dixmont State Hospital or better known as Dixmont Insane Asylum. The builidng was destroyed in 2005.
While tearing down Dixmont many fires were reported in the buildings as well as that landslide that closed route 65 for many days. If these buildings were haunted where did these spirits go when they were tearing down what was left? Don't you think the spirits may have been the real cause of those fires and the landslide?
My mother was sent there in 1965 and spent three plus years undergoing shock treatments. She endured twenty or so treatments and all from what we now call bipolar disorder with heavy delusional episodes. She eventually elected to take her own life. She never drove a car, and relied heavily on her mother for support. The psycho field of medicine back then was barbaric and ignorance abounded. I wanted for years to get even and subject that staff to the same barbaric treatments she suffered.
I live two miles down the road from this place. Me and my friends used to go up there when we were kids. It caught fire in 1998, and was torn down to build a Wal-Mart in 2005. This place used to sit high up on the bluff overlooking the Ohio River and Rt 65, but when they tore it down the ground gave way to a landslide and covered rt 65 under 20 ft of soil.
