The PowerScout 3 has two configurable digital I/O ports. Either port can be used as an input or output—in other words, you can have two inputs, two outputs or one of each.

Input
When a port is used as an input, the meter can count, accumulate, and scale pulses received from any external device such as a gas, water, or other electrical meter. A great advantage for the PowerScout is that it makes this pulse data available through the MODBUS RS485 port. When used this way, the PowerScout 3 can be used for full utility monitoring and reduce the need for additional hardware.

Output
When used as an output, the port can generate pulses for external devices, such as data loggers like the DATApro 4P, that can accept pulse inputs. The PowerScout 3 can be configured to generate pulses corresponding to kWh, kVARh or kVAh.
