A in depth visual tour of Caerlaverock Castle with pipe music by Gavin Maxwell and singing by June Tabor. Photos taken in 2005 & 2007 by Beth Maxwell Boyle. Surrounded by a double moat and hundreds of acres of flat marshy willow woods (known in Scotland as a "moss"), Caerlaverock was built to control the South-West entrance to Scotland which in early times was the waterway across the Solway Firth. Carlaverock Castle was the seat of the chief of Clan Maxwell.

  • I would very much like to email some of my VERY distant relatives

  • @MinexXBuckeyeXxCraft There are two Maxwell groups on Facebook just look under Maxwell clan. You can find me looking for Beth Maxwell Boyle. My brothers are on too and we have a bunch of Maxwell connections we have met we could point you to as well.

  • My 4x great grandmother was Susan Melinda Maxwell McMinn whose family settled in Hendersonville, NC (she was married to James Newton McMinn.)

Thanks so much for sharing this. I may never get to see Caerlaverock Castle in my lifetime, so I will enjoy seeing pictures and videos of it!

  • @MunstersBabe If you do facebook look under Maxwell Clan there are two groups with lots of Maxwells. It's really quite fun. There are a large number of Maxwells from Southern States. My Branch moved from Glasgow to Western Pennsylvania in the 1860s.

  • @Gimmer3 nice to see a fellow maxwell! Hello my distant brother

  • @MinexXBuckeyeXxCraft Distandt sister!

  • My 6th great grandfather, Joel P. Maxwell must have been born here. He is the one who came from Scotland to Virginia. His father was Eustace Maxwell. They were born in Maxwellton which is not part of Dumfries now, I understand. Eustace's ancestors were Earles, but I haven't been able to connect.

  • @Gimmer3 im a guy

  • @MessingWithMatches I agree we Maxwells should visit the home lands but my family i the United states does not have no money to visit ,but what a grand place to be to feel like we were back in the days of old let Caerlaverock not fall and stand true long live the Maxwells!

  • @MessingWithMatches , I agree. It is a lovely place. I went twice and would not mind seeing it again.

  • There was a Maxwell reunion a few years back for my Great Gran's birthday.Until then I didn't realise how many of us there are. I love spending time with my family in Scotland and I just wish I lived in the time when the castle was still a household. People in the USA who say they are a Maxwell should visit the castle as least once in their lives, even if you carry the name just to feel important. It's a lovely place and I'm proud to be in the family I was born into.

  • proud of my family

  • crazy but true at caerlaverock maxwells invited our rival johnstones to a lovely feast we ended up killin almost everyone most of us married into their familys..*lol*

  • @1BattleAngel , That is OK we like hearing from all Maxwells. I only recently found out exactly were my family lived in Scotland before they came to the USA I have recently found a few of my relatives that still live in the UK.

  • Well perhaps its not the same branch then. My branch did not come until about 1856 and settled in the areas around Sharon, PA and Youngstown, Ohio.

You will love tie Islands. I was in the Hebrides for a week in 2007

    Your friend, Beth
