Quite extraordinary!! He goes beyond mere "interpretation" of the work: like the greatest of performing artists, he uses the notes on the page as a beginning, not an end in and of themselves. He takes the composition and transforms it into his own creation - fusing his artistry with that of the composer and producing something new and beautiful. More beautiful than the composition played "the way the composer intended"? I for one do not care: art is both eternal, and ever-changing.

@HolyMotherofGrid I think that is a gross overstatement and insult to all the composers alive or dead, the pianists are mere technicians and morror the composers intentions never overtake them

Absolutely mesmerizing. One of Bach's thorniest pieces taking on unimagined dimensions. The Universe is certainly greater than we can ever know, and here we learn that there is always so much more to learn....Bach by Pletnev; almost no need for the Hadron Collider. Extraordinary!

I like this-Pletnev is the most sensual performance I`ve heard of this movement- -picking away at phrases in a way i've never heard before,he also never loses sight of the bigger picture.
Thanks!
Yep, Pletnev is among the greatest left. There are not so many. Maybe a half dozen?

Among living pianists? Few that I know. Sokolov for sure, and I would urge you to listen to Kemal Gekic (I have uploaded two recordings). Other pianists who recently passed away include Natan Brand and Joseph Villa and they both would be included with Pletnev et al.
