@fromthenorthwest well dorian tends to be used over minor chords - more specifically min, m6, m6/9, m7, m9, m13, and m(add9). Mixolydian is used over dominant chords like 7, 9, 13, and all 7sus4 types.
Oh...but Hendrix couldn't play like that and Jimi was a good player. Me, I prefer Howard Roberts.
