A video highlighting the social, political, and economic failures of America's War on Drugs.

Howard Colvin (The Wire):
I mean, you call something a war and pretty soon everybody gonna be running around acting like warriors. They gonna be running around on a damn crusade, storming corners, slapping on cuffs, racking up body counts. And when you at war, you need a fucking enemy. And pretty soon, damn near everybody on every corner is your fucking enemy. And soon the neighborhood that you're supposed to be policing, that's just occupied territory.

David Simon:
The people most affected by this are black and brown and poor. It's the abandoned inner cores of our urban areas. And we don't, as we said before, economically, we don't need those people. The American economy doesn't need them. So, as long as they stay in their ghettos, and they only kill each other, we're willing to pay a police presence to keep them out of our America. And to let them fight over scraps, which is what the drug war, effectively, is. The war on drugs is a war on the underclass, that's all it is. It has no other meaning.

If you could be Draconian and reduce drug use by locking people up, you might have an argument. But we are the jailing-est country on the planet right now. Two million people in prison. When I started as a police reporter, 33, 34 percent of the federal inmate population was violent offenders. Now it's like, seven to eight percent. So, we're locking up less violent people. More of them. The drugs are purer. They've not-- they haven't closed down a single drug corner that I know of in Baltimore for any length of time. It's not working.

  • I don't necessarily think marijuana use is the most horrible thing. Obviously its not. I just think it's kind of classless to use it, no matter your social status.

  • this is so weird. im from Aust. we have a massive drinking problem, kids do it, people kill each other with booze in their system all the time. they dont go to jail for drinking tho, for the abuse. for the drinking they get rehab... but not that many people smoke dope cos its seen as a bit low-brow. but again, dont go to jail for smoking it.

  • Bahahaha... I'm the 420th 'like'. RON PAUL 2012!!!

  • That was $1 Trillion in prosecutions alone. Now add up the incarcerations of, the police pay,,, it all adds up to one hell of an expensive policy of workfare [welfare] for those that wouldn't be employable in most any other field.

The ninth amendment legalizes all intoxicants as the certain right of intoxicating liquors is today. Marijuana is non toxic by the way.

Prohibitions of pain reliving products = a pay to play for pain relief scam.
