1942 Preston Sturges romantic comedy classic starring Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea. Sturges is acknowledged as the foremost satirist of his time. One film historian referred to him as "The Brueghel of American comedy directors", because of his distinguishing "frantic congestion". He is credited with creating the writer/director movement in Hollywood. Other directors had written their works, notably Chaplin, but Sturges was the first who had previously been a successful screenwriter before adding direction. Previously, directors came from the technical side of the business. Sturges' success led the way for other writer/directors like John Huston and Billy Wilder. The story goes that Sturges sold the story for The Great McGinty to Paramount Pictures for $1 so that he cold be attached to direct (the sum was quietly raised to $10 by the studio for legal reasons).
