Anglican Episcopal Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Christ, commonly referred to as Durham Cathedral, in the city of Durham, England, is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Durham. The Bishopric dates from 995, with the present cathedral being founded in AD 1093. The cathedral is regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with nearby Durham Castle, which faces it across Palace Green.

  • So many memories. I was lucky enough to be a chorister at Durham Cathedral and lived in its shadow at the school in the grounds for 5 years. Thank you for sharing.

  • Nice video. Good job with the pics. I wish I could dissolve, and then seep into the stonework, permeating ever nook, column and statue, becoming one with its ineffable beauty.

    I'm so deep, arent' I.~:))

  • @leedshunk I tend to agree with you there. I've seen many wonderfu places in my travels throughout Europe and the Americas, Asia etc and Durham certainly stands out as one of the greatest creations of man. I am particularly fond of Romanesque (Norman in England) architecture and Durham is possibly the finest example anywhere.

  • @elainebmack . I also had tea and a big slice of gingerbread with clotted cream! Yum Yum!!

  • @claptonbrucebaker Yes i did. I visited Blenheim Palace on a cool, rainy, July day. I was so entranced at the beauty of the palace that I almost got locked in! The history behind it is fascinating. I saw Sir Winston Churchill's baby crib and a lock of his baby hair, also the beautiful grounds and the spot where Sir Winston proposed to his wife-to-be Lady Clementine. I strolled through the Rose Garden and the duck pond with mini waterfall. It was lovely. England has many magical places!

  • @elainebmack That certainly was a stroke of luck, when you enter that building it takes your breath away. Did you visit any of the palaces, or stately home when you were over in the UK. Edinburgh is also a lovely place.

  • @claptonbrucebaker . Just think. I "stumbled" across this magnificent cathedral on my way to Edinburgh back in 2003. The only reason I stopped in Durham (knowing nothing about the cathedral) was to stay in the dorm overnight for cheap until I could leave the next day. I had no idea that I was staying in such a historic place. The next day I visited the cathedral and heard the wonderful choir sing. I was certainly the lucky one that day!

  • @elainebmack Hello there. All the cathedrals in England are architectural masterpieces, but Durham was the first cathedral in Europe with the ribbed vaulting in the ceiling, and it also retains nearly all of its original Norman features. You have obviously visited this beautiful construction to appreciate its absolute magnificence.

  • @claptonbrucebaker . I agree. It is truly awe inspiring.

  • Durham Cathedral in my opinion is the finest piece of architecture in the world.
