A Hotel in Mathare

A HOTEL IN MATHARE is the first of three videos produced through the Rebel Film Board's "Umoja" ("Unity") Video Training Program in Mathare, Nairobi, Kenya between July and August 2010. This collaborative project between RFB participants in Nairobi and Toronto marked the first large-scale joint video production undertaken by the Rebel Film Board, bringing together members from five local youth groups and a solidarity worker from Toronto.

This short documentary was made as an initial exercise by video trainers from Mathare who participated in the "Umoja" program. It depicts the challenges and aspirations of Simon Kamau, who helps run a small restaurant (hotel) in Mathare Slum.

The film was premiered in Mathare (Bondeni) on 13 August to a crowd of about 150 people, and played at the Kenya National Theatre on 14 August.
