I was on the USS LaSalle for the first landing of a Harrier on a US Ship. We were at Pier 12 in Norfolk, VA. It was a great experience. It landed, then our crew loaded a full complement of rockets (Fake of course) then it lifted, backed up and took off over the bay.

of course vertical take off and landing sucks the most fuel, but it's quite normal that fighter jets take off with external tanks

This boat was the Juneau. The Cleveland was on my other WESTPAC.

It is true, it is the USS Cleveland. It was off the coast of Japan in 2006. Trust me, i was the one landing and taking off of the ship..enough said.

That is true. Los Angeles times did a big write up about it a few years ago, hence the callsign "widow maker"
