Universities of India are petty and cheap and would go to any extent to keep their selfish and narrow interests afloat.
Glaring case in point :-- Panjab University, Chandigarh had refused a job to an eminent scientist like Dr. Hargobind Khorana, because he was an "outsider" going by Panjab University's "standards".
-
contd ... It is true that some eminent scientists like Ashoke Sen of TIFR returned to India after making seminal contributions to their field while abroad. But there is really no direction or encouragement in general for returning scientists, not to mention the lack of facilities. India can make a start by creating awareness in schools and budgeting vast sums of money to nutrue science in schools. Probably in another 25 years it will pay off.

As Dr Ramakrishnan says research in science often does not have immediate payoffs. In the west there is a close cooperation between govt agencies, private corporations and educational institutions for a well coordinated research effort regardless of immediate benefits. They commit enormous amounts of funding and effectively allocate and monitor projects. In India there is no awareness of the pay offs of basic research, except in agriculture, space and nuclear sectors.

ur comment seem to be self contradictory. if public univ's cant produce good scientists because of funding, then definitely funding should be able to solve our problem right!!!
-
It is high time people of India take this responsibility on & find solution to it...no "avaatar" is going to solve our problems since they are created by us not by any external factor
-
cont....Lets just not put this one on our Gov. Gov on itself is nothing, it is the people of the country who decide the future. Indians lack the basic confidence in themselves and end up doing white worship. I don't mean to say we are the best but we are no less either. Where have we seen any initiation from the profs & educators in India to form a science body & recognize whatever work is being done right now? Issue is the organizing capability not just reading books.

How stupid is it to judge the quality of education just based on the whether or not they can produce nobel laureate? Media is a fucking joke..Nobel prize is not the only standard by which one should judge the quality but its one of the many standard. Point is "How do we use technology & Science to solve our problems?". West has reached this state from very basic intention to use science in their daily life. We already have good inventors & scientists, it is the failure of society at large.
Tamil nadu politics and policies are cast based and not talent based. So far this situation remains, where sincerity, talent, hard work is not respected, nobel prize for indian doing research in india is a far far far dream. I suffered in India, now I think I am better in science in US. I tried my best to work in India - but my application was rejected just because I was a tamil brahmin. US gave me assistantship to do the same. That is the difference we are talking about.

Hi I strongly believe and have no doubt that Indian Universities itself can never produce a nobel prize winner from within India. We are more than 20 yrs behind cutting edge science in basic and applied research. I am pursuing Masters in Biotechnology abroad and which is a similar field as Dr. Ramakrishnan research is based upon. I congratulate him on this achievement and I agree on what he said.
