    Watched it yesterday in the German TV. Wonderful movie with great actors. On the one hand damn sad, but also with kind of a happy end... But I'm not really sure about that, since the movie is very confusing sometimes, guess thats intended...

    Good point, it's all up for interpretation. It's a tough film to watch as it makes us aware of some painful truths and incertainties about our own lives.

    in run of the mill "ailment" movie(which this wonderful film is not);the obvious elements of love and ageing and loss would be it; but this movie is unique in that Julie Christie's character sensing the acceleration of her illness, in order to spare her husband the pain of seeing her "disappear" makes the selfless sacrifice of putting herself in the facility before she is further along. Great movie. New York Film Critics Awards Best Actress, Screenplay and First Film.

    How is the movies theme limited to 1 thing? It's love, sacrifice, ageing, saying goodbeye, lots of things. If sacrifice is the biggest theme in your opinion fine. I think that's too narrow of a theme description. Losing loved ones is the bigger theme in my opinion.

    She wanted to be comitted because she knew the burden she'd put on him would be less if she was comitted and that he might be able to move on better. That's how I see it.
