I find that when shooting outside like with landscapes that trusting the meter is a good thing, but when you are inside exposing for talent it is a much different thing. With the Canon DSLR's you don't have the choice of 4 different metering modes as you do with stills, you are stuck with the evaluative metering mode which doesn't work well in all situations.

  • Do you use Magic Lantern? I use the daylights out of it to check for exposure. The zebra function and the histogram is fantastic.

  • @Parrott65 yes, I have done many videos on it.

  • Heey Dave I love your video's since they give me lots of information about using my 550d for video.

Did you do some real tutorials ass well? You talk about exposure in this video but you don't really show what you do with you camera. I am a beginner so I can learn a lot by watching tutorials...

  • @Roefeltje I plan on making more of them, I have done some about a year ago but I need to update them with what I know now.

  • Do you do all your exposure metering in neutral pic style and then switch to your flat pic style just before shooting ? It's the only way to get the exposure. The focusing is definitely more difficult in flat.

  • @Wheel333 That seems to be the way most people do it, but I am not using flat anymore.

  • Great video, but as someone else has commented, I think what youtube lacks right now is a video tutorial showing beginners the ins and outs of the video function of the Canon 550d. The reason I bought it was because of how good it is meant to be, just wish someone would post a good 20 minute video explaining it!

  • damn you a good lookin old man

  • Dave's videos never tell us what camera settings he uses. So he doesn't really teach us how to take good photos or videos.

  • whatchu talking 'bout willis?!

  • @drumat5280 I am not that far into your videos. I just started watching. Sorry for asking a premature question :(

  • I've always though using a flat picture style gave more of a realistic look, not crushed blacks and over saturated colors, and digital sharpening sucks!

  • Looking forward to see your video you mentioned. also, great tutorials and thoughts on video dslr for beginners, I am on the same level as you, shooting, correcting, learning, shooting correcting, learning!
