This is a collection of images from a trip to China's Qinghai Province in late April/early May 2007, set to the song "Cool Calm" by Kensuke Shiina & Irama Buyung. The trip covered Xining City, Qinghai Lake, Taer Monastery, Tongren Monastery, Xunhua City, Mengda Lake, Wendu Monastery, and Huzhu City. The man at 3:40 is not wearing a hat, rather, his hair is spun into a turban. Qinghai means "Turquoise Sea" in Chinese; even though this province is located very far from the coast, Qinghai lake is so massive that it resembles a sea horizon, and thus it justifies the moniker. Qinghai has traditionally been a part of ethnographic Tibet, but it also features other unique nationalities, such as the Sala muslims, descendants of Kazakh nomads who settled here 800 years ago, and the Tu people, who were once closely tied to northeastern Mongolian tribes, but have long since settled in the hills north of the Yellow River.
