The Better Beer Authority gives O'Fallen Smoked Porter a shot and once again the boys are in disagreement. Find out who gives the dissenting vote in this riveting beer review!

Partial Transcript: "On Tap OFallon Smoked Porter

Hi. Im James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority. Today we are talking about OFallon Smoked Porter. The OFallon Brewery is located 30 miles northwest of downtown St. Louis.

Its a relatively new and small operation it was founded in 2000 and has only 7 employees.

OFallon Smoked Porter is one of their four year-round offerings. It is an American Porter with 6 percent ABV and 24 IBUs. It won the Gold Medal at the 2004 Great American Beer Festival for best Smoked Beer in America and OFallon isnt afraid to brag about that.

In the brewing process Malting is a two-step process where the grain usually barley is made to germinate by soaking it in water. The second step halts germination by drying the malt with hot air.

Where do most Smoked Beers get that Smoky flavor? The malted barley is dried over an open flame as opposed to kiln-drying it - which keeps the smoke away from the wet malt. Beechwood is one of the preferred woods used in this process.

Q&A (What flavors other than smoke can you detect?)

On a sad note, wed like to dedicate this episode of the Better Beer Authority to a special dog named Maddie. She passed away unexpectedly this past weekend and our thoughts and prayers are with Scott and Katie Blickhan who are dealing with this huge loss.

Thats it for today. Im James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority."

  • I think this a poor review sorry just saying

  • @beaubicknese Any thing we could do to improve it?

  • this is an interesting review. i haven't tried this beer, and i'm not sure whether or not any distributors in miami (my place of residence) carry it. I'm generally a fan of porters, so if i can find it i'd like to give this a try. i'd be very curious to hear your opinions on Okocim porter, which is one of my favorites.

  • @nypoet22 It's a small brewery so they may not have made it to Miami yet. I was surprised to find it in Ohio. Pretty good beer though.

  • I didn't get the smokey flavor being overwhelming at all...it IS a simple brew, dark and roasty, with just a HINT of smoke....I REALLY had to concentrate to find the smoke in it at all?

    I'd give it a 7 as well.

  • @bmeyer44 Do you wish that it would have been smokier?

  • Brian it's espresso not expresso.

  • @AgileHProductions perhaps just a bit...but it would have to be very slight as smoke flavor can overpower quickly.

  • @rvdsm I just had O'Fallen Hemp Hop Rye last night. That was only my second O'Fallen brew, but it was pretty tasty too. I can't say that I could taste the hemp seed.

  • O'Fallon makes great beer. I haven't had one yet that hasn't impressed.
