This video segment on switch rod techniques is from the upcoming "Switch Rod Casting Techniques" (DVD and Blu-Ray Disc), which will be available in late January 2009. Switch rods that allow you to cast with one or two hands are quickly gaining popularity for their versatility and performance. Whether its nymphing for trout, launching a shooting head to the other bank, or even trying to avoid the willows behind you with a snake roll spey cast, switch rods will do it all! The longer length will also provide the ultimate in mending, line control and presentations. To have more fun and catch more fish, switch to one of these rods.

  • A perfectly useless video. I saw nothing that showed any advantage to using the next great fly fishing gimmick.

  • PoodlePack, you must have seen a different video... When you watch the video pay close attention to the advantages...Switch rods allow more line control during the presentation due to their length, decreases false casting keeping the fly in the water longer and less fatigue, allows for spey casting techniques, easier to cast further distances especially when wading deeper, little or no back cast room needed...are you sure you watched the entire video?

  • how many meter are needed off the reel to start the cast?

and how many meter add with the switch casting.

  • you need just enough line to feel the rod loading usually 25-30 feet (8-10 meters)-outside the rod tip, although you can simply roll cast at closer distances. Switch rods can easily cast 100 feet (30-35 meters) plus.

  • Using a Beulah? Looked like a Beulah Switch...

  • Enjoyed it. One more encouragement to get one :)

  • Very nice video showing some techniques on the casting, breaking the rod and reel down, overall awesome video. One question that I have though, I would like to get into fly fishing for steelhead up here in NY. It's not really necessary to spey fish bc the rivers are not monsters but they are medium sized soo i think spey would be overkill on them. I was just wondering that that rod you had probally wasn't cheap.. because my budget is more towards the $200 range.. please help :)

  • @craigcsteele well this goes with the fisher's preferencens. if for example you're mostly fishing medium to short distances without sink tips and mostly overhead casting, go with a WF. But if you want to throw heavy sink tip and heavy fly with spey cast just go with a Skagit compact. Or, if you are spey casting without sink tips just go with a scandi compact head. it depends on you. the rod is so versatile that Almost all of type of line fits on it excep long belly spey line

  • What kind of line do you recommend? Skagit? Skandi? Spey? WF_F?

  • 3:20 the reel needs to be to sizes bigger to balance the rod ? if i'm having a #6 switch rod a 8-9 fly reel is going to be okay ? i know it depends of the reel's weight also but generally it goes this way ?

  • Saying a switch rod is a gimmick is absolutely absurd. Bob meiser has been making these rods for over 20 years. It's not new. Other companies just realized an untapped market and the efficiency and diversity of these rods. Get one, you'll learn PoodlePack.

  • whats a switch rod?

  • I already have a 5wt 9ft, so why not just get a 13ft spey rod in like, a 7wt? I think about medicine in this situation, if you have a runny nose and a headache why take benadryl? It's too much, just take aspirin and some runny nose meds? You get the point, I just think it's too veratile and will give you crappy spey casts, weak fights on smaller fish, and just not my style. I'll be buying a spey rod soon
