my dad, red army sarge 1983:

so NATO attacks with its Chieftains Leo2 etc. tanks. the soviet troops whitdraw from the area and the enemy moves in and gets whiped out by tactical nukes. then the T-55 tanks roll in and mop-up whats left. most of the T-55 tank horde will be expended to 'absorb' enemy's tactical nuke retaliation, whatever's left goes straight to junkyard due to extreme radiation contamination. 2 days later fallout looses 90% of its energy and T-80 roll in. T-55 costs 35.000$

they have 218 abrams and 150 M-84s they ordered a few years ago. they ordered both because of the political pressure to buy Abrams.
as kuwait lays on sand, and abrams chokes on sand, i really see no other option but political pressure resulting in buying them.
and instead of M-84, why not Leclerk, Leopard, Challenger?
obviously they found M-84 better.

i don't think price made a difference to the Kuwaitis (i know, you said one of the reasons, but i'm underliningM-84's usefulness here).

sorry, with all due respect, i know people who are literary a walking military encyclopedia and they smirk at the idea of abrams in desert. unless they put in a diesel engine, a Yugo is more reliable than that gas turbine in the desert...a single sand grain can ruin the turbine...

as i don't believe kuwait being in war any time soon, they must have bought them under political pressure... recession an all. oh well, their money.

i know that xD.... Abrams has too big engine consumption...its the most "eating" tank in world...he is too reliable for peace use...you need to have tank that dont cost you too much...like its Kuwaits M84 or T90...it dont need to much mainentrance and it will work great....M84 worked 48 hours without stopping on Kuwaits test O.o Yugo is the best car xD

yes, the 48 hours test is called the "brick test", they put a brick on the gas pedal.
i guess for actual combat use they have t-90s and m-84s. truth be said, yugo may not be the BEST car out there, but it's still a lot more reliable than given credit. mom had it and during a few years she had it, it never broke down, driving every day... she was lucky to buy a good series though.
some series were crap, some were good.
