One of America's great living novelists lives off the grid in the Maine backwoods?

She just doesn't trust the system - nor want any part of it.

  • It aggravates her to go out and shop and to fill her car up with gas because she is a decent human being who "Cares". If there were more people who cared about others and there effect on there fellow man through economics then this would not be a problem. The problem is that we have too much entertainment and our education system is dumbing our children down as well the colleges are turning out slaves for the system that is not serving the betterment of humanity.

  • I know she doesn't have a tv, internet, phone-----so whoever knows her, tell her I love her!

  • If you're interested, read her magnum opus--MERRY MEN--a brilliant book, and the book she thinks of as her best work...I'm not sure if Chute is "one of the greatest living novelists," but MERRY MEN is one of the greatest novels of our time...Last I checked it was out of print (which is crazy), but you can surely find the book used on amazon.

  • Wow, I've never heard of her before but now I think I'll check out her books.

  • Does anyone know how I might be able to get a hold of Carolyn Chute for an interview?

  • Carolyn Chute's novels are American treasures. Her first, "The Beans of Egypt, Maine," is the most famous, partly because they made it into a movie. I liked her second novel, "Letourneau's Used Auto Parts" much better and her massive "Merry Men" is a masterpiece. Great novelists write about real issues and the core of our lives. This does not necessarily make for the level of fame and financial success enjoyed by novelists who are essentially in the entertainment business.

  • Carolyn Chute is Indeed a great novelist , and much more! Her political views are cutting edge . A profound philosopher she has a raw insight into the America most don't want to talk about . She is humble and devastatingly honest ! If u have the pleasure of meeting Ms. Chute , I promise you wont forget her !!
