@amaralmfdl like i commented on another link not long ago, apparently (so i've read about him) conor had taken singing lessons in order to sing this way lol. imo i don't think the songs would have such an impact if he sang like peopel usually do in songs... like you said 'sing well and show emotion' i don't think the songs would have same feel... sound.. etc. if he hadn't done it this way-

@amaralmfdl Well then my friend, listen to the Mystic Valley Band! I can't even recognized it's him singing! I personally love both groups, but it makes sense where you're coming from.
