Bipolar Tesla coil in action

Here's about a minute's worth of my new bipolar Tesla coil in operation. Powered by a 7.5kV NST with 2 x 4nF 20kV capacitors. No wood or ferrous metal is used in construction. The frame is half inch (12.7 mm) PVC tubing. Arc length here is about four inches (it is capable of more). Four post static spark gap cooled by a vacuum cleaner blower. Coils with centered primaries are usually 1/2 wave tuned, rather than 1/4, as for upright coils.

I've heard of this being done, but a computer cooling fan isn't very strong. I use a vacuum cleaner blower. I have also used a hand held hair dryer set on Air Only (no heat).

If I finally get my SSTC to work wit 220Vac, maybe ill convert it to bipolar and audio-mod it :)
