The 4501 is by far my favorite steam locomotive!

This loco is special to us in Stearns, Ky. She was the biggest loco the K&T owned, and the most powerful. I seen her in 1983, and she was the most beautiful piece of machinery I'd ever seen. My grandfather took me to see her, and it remains with me to this day. He's responsible for my love of anything SR/NS......

How long did the 4501 have the short tender in excursion service?
-
i grew up along the Southern mainline in TN. Although I live here in Montana now I remember 4501 from my youth. I hope they get her running again

Purdie was the master mechanic, Jim Bistline was the VP in charge. Bill would have likely come up to check out the engine. Bill was Master Mechanic - Steam from 1967 or 68 until he retired after the '82 season.

That sounds about right, I think Bistline was there also. I think they were passing through Columbus during a business car tour of the N&W. All this was long ago and far away and I may not be remembering things right.

Cool to see video of the short tender. Walter Dove is likely running. Bill Purdie didn't join the program until late 1967 and didn't run as much in the early years. There were still plenty of regular engineers with steam experience at that time, and Bill didn't start running alot until he was forced to due to the retirement of most of the old steam men.

Thanks for the info. Was Purdie the head of the steam program on the Southern in the early 70"s? I'm thinking it was Purdie (and Claytor) who stopped by the Ohio Railway Museum to check out the 578 shortly after we got her back in service. Thought they might be able to use her, but decided against it in the end. I think they wanted something bigger.
