I think Ron Howard did quite well as Holmes. His interpretation brought a bit more humor to the role. I still prefer Rathbone, but I think Ron Howard did a decent job, especially considering that this is very early television. There is also quite good chemistry between Watson & Holmes here. Watson is more like the original Watson character from the books, not the bumbler portrayed in the Rathbone films.

@MisterRayVideo The explanation is simple. This was a television series that was shot mostly in France. In the 1950s France was a low-budget locale for filming. (Obviously it's not a low-budget location any more, unfortunately). While the main actors were British, they used French actors in many of the minor roles. Some of them did a good job of faking an English accent, but that's a pretty tough thing to pull off. I'm not sure why they didn't overdub the people with French accents.

@mrsjoshica Ronald Howard is too bland. Basil Rathbone is much better.

I LOVE Ronald Howard as Sherlock Holmes. I own the DVD's and absolutely enjoy his sense of humor. Also this Sherlock Holmes and Watson play very well off one another.

The social club mentioned is a thinly veiled reference to a Masonic lodge.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is almost as famous for having been a Mason as he is for having invented Sherlock Holmes.
This woman cares so much about her little girl, but trusts strange men wandering the streets at night to bring her home? Mind boggling to say the least.

This is a wonderful Holmes, a superb Watson! Dry, and enticing.
