Got him, finally!! His name is Steven Mackintosh, and he's had parts in lots of random TV drama series like Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost (my parents always watched them when I was a kid). He was never in Eastenders according to his list of roles, but it could be wrong... He also played the son in the 2003 British film 'The Mother', with Daniel Craig and Anne Reid, which I first saw a while ago but had forgotten. So there you go, mystery solved :)
