The 12 sides that comprise I'm Your Girl (1962) are a response to Joni's loyal enthusiasts who requested that the enormously versatile vocalist record a long-player of jazz-styled standards. Along with her husband and musical director, Anthony Acquaviva, Joni selected a dozen familiar pop melodies for a songbook of freshly arranged classics. She abandoned the immense orchestration found on her series of "100 Strings" releases for a smaller, yet equally effective backing combo under the direction of conductor and arranger Jimmie Haskell. His scores provide Joni with a light and airy instrumentation that perfectly complements Joni's rich and sensuous tonality.
Many people conclude the strings were added to the vocals with the small jazz group. But actually the strings were there with the jazz group and it was all recorded live together. Amazing, given the thrilling quality of the sound. Joni, of course, is peerless here, taking Eddie Fisher's "You're My Girl" and giving it a whole new identity.

@Fegen I have to agree, John...The main reason why some people refer to her as the singer with the "high school voice".

I love the youthful sound of Joni's voice on this recording. She has always had
a way of taking a song and giving it a fresh and exciting sound.
