I guess the whole “Aeris/Aerith” debate rages because the nostalgic fans that played FF7 when it first came out knew her as Aeris, and even if Aerith is closest to the actual Japanese it still feels jarring to the people who first played this game. It’s kind of like how I hate the GBA translation of opera house scene in FF6 because I first experienced it on the SNES and the way they changed the lyrics just felt wrong.
