The pain is normal tooth sensitivity. Take a few days break in between uses or switch from two strips a day to just one a day. Or, use a toothpaste for sensitivity.

And the 'brown' gums are probably because you got the strips in contact with them. They whiten because of hydrogen peroxide, which whitens most things it touches... including gums. Follow the instructions carefully and read the fine print.
