Hot Jazz / Cool Garden at the Louis Armstrong House
August 22, 2009
Featuring dancers: Heidi Rosenau and Joe McGlynn
Featured musicians: Tin Pan Band
Song: Down In New Orleans
Excerpted from www.yehoodi.com:
The members of the Tin Pan Blues Band describe themselves as Ray Charles and Tom Waits at a Bourbon Street Parade. This festive four-man combo celebrates the most dominant and enlightened strains of American music from the early 20th century: jazz, blues, and popular song. The Tin Pan Blues Band is making its first appearance at the Louis Armstrong House Museum.

BACKGROUND:
It is only natural for jazz musicians to play in the home of the legendary Satchmo, who moved to Corona, Queens, with his wife Lucille in 1943. The couple spent the rest of their lives in this house. Thanks to the vision and financial support of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, their residence still containing its original furnishings is a National Historic Landmark administered by Queens College. The tour explores the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong and includes recordings of him enjoying a meal with Lucille at his dining room table, chatting with friends in his living room, or practicing the trumpet in his den. For more information on the concerts and the Louis Armstrong House Museum, including directions, visit www.louisarmstronghouse.org.
I took a tour of the house, and it is well worth it! The interior is quite an eye-opening experience, esp. the space age contemporary kitchen with the built-in appliances and the 2-mini oven (very state-of-the-art at that time) as well as art deco silver wallpaper and Mrs. Louis Armstrong's amazing shoe closet! Of course the legendary icon's den/study/music room is really quite extraordinarily special! Not to be missed also is the special portrait of Mr. Armstrong painted by Tony Bennett and many more highlights in this charming house!
Fantastic! Nice to hear somebody singing like Armstrong really sang and not just caricaturing his gravelly voice. Too good to be a tribute, but a continuation of that classic jazz spirit.

We happened to come across Tin Pan performing in Central Park NY in early august and they were brilliant! They attracted quite a crowd! Look out for them if you are there.
Didn't see the dancers though.
Love the video.
