I followed a tutorial on Creative Cow and this is what I ended up creating, I am quite impressed with it, it is made in Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

I remember doing this tutorial...

the guy made the spider bit in the animation bit look so easy, then he said it took him a whole week just to figure out how to make the spiders legs move properly. i thought damn...animation isn't as easy as it looks after all..

are you ramping the same layer as your background?

when you add an effect to an AE solid layer makes the layer invisible except for where the effect is evident. try importing an image from photoshop and applying the ramp to that. if you want the image to show through the ramp, make one layer for the image, one layer for the image w/ramp effect and lower the opacity on the ramped image
