This episode of Danwei Music is about Say Bok Gwai (死白鬼), San Francisco's first Chinese American hardcore band.

Say Bok Gwai's original compositions are rooted in American punk/thrash/ hardcore music but sung primarily in Cantonese. The subject matter of their lyrics ranges from Chinese American identity to grappling with traditional Chinese values. Their music is not for the timid or easily offended.

Frontman Alex Yeung is a long time San Franciscan musician who has worked in both the local rock and experimental music scenes. Alex serves as the songwriter and guitarist for Say Bok Gwai, as well as playing guitar for the instrumental group Fear of Math. Drummer Andre Custodio has been an integral part of the Bay Area experimental music scene for over 10 years and is also part of the experimental trio, Tri-Cornered Tent Show. Say Bok Gwai has released their self-titled debut CD on Monkey King Reccords.

This episode of Danwei Music was shot and edited by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, with music by Say Bok Gwai and the intro tune by Beijing band Reflector.

  • Chinese rock/metal!! REPRESENT!! I'm Chinese American myself and seeing Say Bok Gwai doing what they're doing fuckin is awesome! Its good to see more Chinese/Asian Americans breaking out of the norm like doing hard extreme rock not giving a fuck then doing mainstream crappy gay R&B/pop, Rap or being a nerd studying/ and reading books all day in college. Not that being smart and going to college is bad but you get the picture.
