At the height of the Western sabre-rattling (remember Reagan's 'empire of evil' tirade) in 1988, the Russians became finally convinced that the West was going to launch the attack. Only one man was able to convince them that this was not the case, and spared the world - and Britain too, I believe - Armageddon. No Westerner - but an East German intelligence man - Topas, inside NATO headquarters literally saved billions of lives, while the West was putting them recklessly at risk. Thank you Topas!
If you had a spy for Al Qaeda whom informed them of agents so they could arrest them would you see them as heroes? Anyone who betrays their own country and people like that should be executed. Anyway, apparently Philby didn't get the warm welcome in Moscow he was promised and was under house arrest for quite some time. He was promised a high rank position with good pay which wasn't the case then he cheated with his good "friends" wife, comrade Maclean. Once a scoundrel always a scoundrel.
@blackmore4 Philby might have 'betrayed' his British employers but crucially, he never betrayed his own beliefs and ideals. He dedicated his life to furthering what he believed to be the most desirable system and took massive personal risks; living a life that, to a large part, must have been extremely stressful. Philby saw the infiltration of Western intelligence as a similar act to undercover police infiltrating criminal gangs-there is in a level of unavoidable betrayal, often regrettable.

This man killed many people. People who saved lives, but were murdered due to the acts of this man. This a great war criminal.

@vincentjdrummer No, much as I sympathize with his political affiliations, there is no nobility in betrayal.
