Just a quick video showing that the 585 Barrage CAN be flicked open like a non-assisted Axis knife. It can NOT be flicked closed.

  • I don't think you'll want to sell it anyway. The clip being mounted to the scale is the only negative thing about this knife, and after owning it I'm not worried about it anymore. I've had the scale off, and it feels pretty rigid, no worries here.

I rarely sell my knives off either :-)

btw, the 580 is supposed to be available sometime in April. I'm tempted... I really like the blade shape and the 154CM steel is nice.

  • A lot of people question the necessity of assisted opening on an Axis lock, since the regular Axis lock knives can be flicked open easily. One of the criticisms of this knife is that the clip is just screwed into the Valox handle and not into the metal liner. Think about it, metal screws into fiberglass reinforced nylon. I don't know the reason BM would make them that way.

  • I don't know if it was a necessity, but Axis Assist is fun to play with. I have had a few regular Axis knives and they are great too. I suppose people think Auto Axis' are not necessary as well.

I don't understand the clip mounting method either. I don't see a good reason for doing it that way. But, for what it's worth, it doesn't flex or feel like a weak spot to me. I still like the knife, and if the clip mount or scale breaks, Benchmade will be fixing it.

  • @andrelemalle The screws go into the stainless steel liners underneath the handles, or at least all the ones in the knife store I worked at did.

  • @jjurasic On the Mini Barrage I have, the clip screws go into metal inserts that are molded into the Valox scales, not the stainless steel liners. I know because I've had it apart :) Mine is a First Run, maybe they've changed it since then...

  • I just don't get why you would want to flick it open when the assisted thumbstud works so go.

  • I don't know. Some one asked me if it was possible, so here it is. I prefer the thumb stud myself.

  • Yep/ easy to do.

  • @andrelemalle Working in a knife store all the barrages we had the screws went into the stainless steel liners that run under the handle scales.

  • I am thinking about doing a pre-order on the 580 Barrage, so I clearly think the knife might be good to own. I've been way out of control with knife buying this whole year. I keep thinking that if I really don't like I knife, I'll sell it. I never do.

  • I like the flick.....nice!!!
