This gospel-tinged cut is from Brown's 2004 CD _Holding My Own_.

Performed by: Shirley Brown

Written by: Frederick Knight

Soul diva Shirley Brown is best known for her 1974 smash hit "Woman to Woman," but she has had a number of respectable hits over the past 35 years. Unfortunately, shortly after the release of "Woman to Woman" (the last major hit for Stax Records), the label filed for bankruptcy and Brown was forced to start over. Subsequent record labels gave Brown substandard material and poor promotion, leaving her without resources to make a significant impact in the music industry. The single "Through the Storm" is a good example as to why Brown deserved a much better fate!

Frederick Knight is a singer, songwriter, and producer in his own right and a fellow Stax alum. He is best known for his 1972 hit "I've Been Lonely for So Long:"

Knight has written several songs for Shirley Brown through the years, but he may be best known for writing and producing Anita Ward's across-the-board smash "Ring My Bell" in 1979: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy2ZW1WhfJ0

  • I heard this song as I was preparing to bury my mother (unexpectantly) two years ago just flipping through the stations and I listen every so often just for encouragement. I love you mama and I miss you sooo very much!

  • So sorry for your loss. God bless.

  • Very affirming song, sung with her customary passion by the wonderful Shirley Brown, God, was this woman blessed with a fabulous voice!
