@JacksonSargent Japanese soldiers in Iwo Tou were mainly composed of instant soldiers, in another words, most of them were ordinary citizens recruited and sent quickly. They fought for saving evacuation time of main land citizens in Kanto region which include Tokyo. They did great. As a matter of fact, only one of my family, mother's brother, was killed by air raid. He was too small to evacuate with brothers from Tokyo and couldn't survive through intense heat of fire caused by Air raid.

I wonder if those surviving Marines feel their comrades fell in vain.
Where in europe the GI's liberated oppressed peoples and manouvres made sense, on pacific islands much felt like useless battles (Think of Peleliu) for gaining an airstrip that isn't used anyway (or at least not to fullest potential; goes for IwoJima as well) having more than enough ACs and the A-bomb would finish it all anyway. (btw the lib of Philipp was a personal agenda of MacA and strateglly delayed atack on JPN.

@Ladysensei They were brave man - even if they were scared; only fools wouldn't be. Respect for everyone who fought that battle - and many others. They should never be forgotten.

All credit to the USMC you had it tough out there, just watched the Pacific series, my jaw was on the floor at times, very well done, i'm not surprised many veterans chose not to recall their experiences, few in number now, if what was depicted on that series was typical of what they saw, god bless you all.

In Memory of my Father, Coporal Albert James Stone, USMC, 4th Marine division who made 4 landings in the Pacific, including Siapan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and was a radio operator who witnessed both flags raised on Iwo Jima.
He rarely spoke about it, only when asked.
The movie "Flags of our Fathers" is exactly as he described it. I will always be amazed that he lived through all of this, for I was merely a twinkle in his eye then.

Thank you for your support. The U.S. is currently fighting a different kind of enemy. A relentless enemy known as terrorism. An enemy that will stop at nothing to destroy what free people everywhere hold dear. In order to destroy this enemy the world must present a strong united front and never back down because of terrorist threats or actions.
