This is not a spectacular ships at sea video. This is shaky movie footage shot by a young sailor recording his travels with a hand-held, Super 8 mm movie camera. The movies were taken during SoCal Ops, a midshipman cruise, and the 1972 - 1973 WestPac cruise of the USS Leonard F. Mason (DD-852), the ship I was on from 1971 to 1974. Locations seen in the video are San Francisco, Pago Pago, American Samoa, Auckland, Wellington, and Tauranga, New Zealand, Manus Island, and Hong Kong. Ships seen in the video are USS Horne (DLG-30), USS Orleck (DD-886), USS Leonard F. Mason (DD-852), USS Morton (DD-948), and USS Bradley (DE-1041).

I posted a video earlier of some of the movie footage seen here. However, this is a remastered version from a new high definition, frame by frame digital scan of the original movie film. This video also includes footage never before presented to the public.

  • Thanks for a great vid. I was aboard DD 886 from '70 - '73. I didn't take a lot of pics or vids and I wish I had done so. Al Erickson B DIV

  • @rivethead4486 You're welcome! I have more, including some nice pix of DD-886. Contact me if interested. Dave Faige OI DIV

  • Thanx Dave - A ride down memory lane, 38 years later! Podstronski.

  • @jryno25 You're welcome! Actually, I shot more footage than is shown in the video here. Remember the equator crossing? Also, I received some more movie footage of the ship from dry dock in Sasebo to Pearl Harbor. Let me know if you're interested.

  • One chance, no re-takes, not shaky at all.

Pretty good filming for that era. Thanks Again!

  • Thanks! Enjoy the DVD - it has this video with extra footage.
