I mean as fans we can make all the excuses we want. I thought this quote from Everton's website summed it up:
Everton defender Joleon Lescott told the club's official website: "I thought they did well and were sharp, I've been told they are bottom of their league, which I find surprising because they fully deserved their victory."
Actually MLS is at midseason break (LA only played 11 games). As for Everton playing bad, they were undefeated in preseason until Real spanked them. The score should have been MUCH worse had it not been for the excellent play of Tim Howard.
It was at night so I do not think weather was an issue. And Everton did not just step off the plane as they had an open practice in Utah two days before the game so they should have been adjusted to the timezone.
So what - you are making comparisons between a team that steps off a plane after a 12 hour flight and 8 hour time difference into a humid atmosphere (and altitude) and in pre-season mode - one day's training to acclimatise.
MLS are at the end of their season. It's just a training match FHS.
Everton will go well - I'd be much more concerned if this was mid-season in more temperate conditions. This will prove to have been a useful warm up despite Noredeath's and Ranndino's prediction!!

In other words, they just got beat...by a club who has only won 1 MLS match in 15 games this season!
