A few weeks ago, LaMarr Darnell Shields and Meshelle, made a BIG decision -- to celebrate their 12th Wedding Anniversary by running in the 26.2 mile Under Armor Baltimore Marathon. They recruited a team to join them including their trainer and good friend, Guinness Book Record Holder and National Fitness Coach, Chauncey Deon Whitehead; Romell "Olubusola" Moon; and former student Monique Armstrong. The goal is to raise funds for PRAISE and Goaldiggers The Sankofa Project, two programs that assist youth in achieving educational success. PRAISE offers academic preparation for college through supplemental instruction, Saturday classes, and a two-week summer component on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. Goaldiggers The Sankofa Project is an unprecedented program that offers a nontraditional approach to fostering educational excellence for girls in Baltimore's Park Heights Community by helping them to reclaim their identity, giving them access to travel, and providing group mentoring and intense academic support. The program is built upon a three-point thrust of understanding birthright, academic excellence and leadership development, and aims to build cultural self identity by introducing African American teens to the study of their ancestry, heritage and lineage through anthropology, technology and DNA testing. Goaldiggers The Sankofa Project culminates with an ancestral voyage to Ghana, West Africa.
