Tesla coils rely on having the primary circuit ( The Primary coil and capacitor Bank) in RESONANCE with the secondary circuit

The secondary circuit is also a coil and capacitor and the CAPACITANCE is provided by the TOP LOAD

 The size of the Toroid ( top Load) is determined by the capacitance required to bring the secondary Circuit into resonance with the primary circuit

IN IT SELF, IT DOES NOT MAKE BIGGER SPARKS

It has to match everything else
