Just to give you an idea of what these Firefighters had to go through last night, it was 10 degrees, the closest hydrant was at 2600 Glacier and the fire was at 3100 Glacier, the only ways in were either the beach or a small side street that barely fit an engine, and then the walk down to the actual fire scene. These poor guys busted their asses on this fire!!! The call came in just before 1am, on arrival 901 advised a working fire in a 2 story frame dwelling, within minutes a 1st alarm was requested. All companies staged 2 blocks away and had to walk into the scene, then the work could begin. Crews remained on scene for over two hours and investigators were on scene working on cause and origin. Nobody was hurt at the fire scene that I know of. Great job on an extremely difficult fire, I tip my hat to the Porter County agencies.

  • Nice video. Good thing that doesn't happen too often...

  • YOUR NOT SHITTIN!!! That would suck

  • Nice video Ed. We were able to put the first arriving engine on the dead end street at the top of the hill the video is shot from. From there we pulled a 3" down that set of stairs to the house. We took two hotel packs down and they were supplied by the 3". Other crews did a great job getting water supply, we never lost water while in the house. Thanks for that :)

  • Believe it or not I waited about 20-30 minutes into the box to head out to the scene, you guys truly had your work cut out for you on this fire. All I did was walk to the scene and I was spent, I can't imagine having to work the scene. I am glad to hear there was no loss of water, glad the hydrant wasn't frozen! Stay safe and stay warm

  • If you can not drive to it, how did they move in?

  • Good question, never thought of it. Walking in sand not carrying anything sucks!

  • Seems to me a grass truck could get down to the beach and drafted or taken a portable pump. Beach front in Indiana is not a thing I'd ever imagined, but I guess they do have a lot of lake front. They definitely had a lot of manpower.

  • alot of hose lay..Nice job by Porter Fire!

  • Check it out on Google Maps, the house is actually on the beach. There is no road access what so ever. The equipment you see on the beach had to drive across the sand, don't think a pumper would have made it out there.

  • OK, this is lame........lol.....So, water wouldn`t have been an issue IF they could have accessed the street the house were on. Could have drafted out of the lake.....IF, they could get the apparatus down there..
