NEW YORK -- Cpl. Andrew Marcum, military working dog handler, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, allows his dog to bit him during Marine Day Times Square, May 27. The Enterprise, Ore., native recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan with the dog he was preforming with, here, May 27. He is one of more than 3,000 Marines, Sailors and Coast Guardsmen in the area participating in community outreach events and equipment demonstrations as part of Fleet Week New York 2011. The bond of loyalty and trust that today's soldiers share with their dogs is much the same as the relationship shared by dogs and soldiers in the American Civil War. At that time there was no official program for use of war dogs, and most of the dogs who accompanied soldiers in Blue and Gray were mascots or companions. They shared the soldiers' hardships and helped to raise their spirits at one of the bleakest times in our country's history. You can learn a little more about them here:
