QR National (QRN) Brisbane to Melbourne service 3BM7 is seen entering Dynon freight yards on 7 January 2010 with the impressive motive power combination of LDP006, LDP002, LDP008, 6006 & 6005. Only the LDP units were powered up, the two brand new 6000 class locomotives were being hauled dead attached to Melbourne to commence working the Melbourne to Adelaide route.
The QRN 6000 class locomotives are based on the C44aci heavy duty diesel electric locomotive design which delivers over 4300hp for tractive effort purposes. Similar locomotives are operated by Pacific National (92 class), ARG (AC4300 class), and Xstrata Coal (XRN class).

My bubble is still as big as ever... ;-) the video comments for this series of movies already noted the 6000's were dead attached.

and it's about tractive effort and adhesion as well. Don't forget at the end of the day you have smooth metal wheels running on smooth metal rails - you can only pull so much before the wheels start-a-slipping (and ruin the wheels and rails). It's all well and good to have a million kW engine but if it only takes 1500kW to spin 12 wheels (whilst pulling an average train weight in nominal conditions) then you've wasted quite a lot of time and money.

Simple answer is you wouldn't save on fuel or running costs. And all infrastructure would need to be updated (trackwork to carry the rather heavy loco). It would be a far more cost effective solution just to upgrade everything to, say, US standards.
BTW have you ever stood next to a 22000Hp diesel generator and seen just how big (and noisy) it is?
