If you rent, know this: Your landlord could be breaking the law. Since most local housing authorities don't randomly check up on landlords, it's important to know your rights. For example:
Landlords can't discriminate against you if you have kids or because of your age or health. Adam Murray is the executive director of the Inner City Law Center in Los Angeles. He says that a lot of times landlords will try to persuade prospective tenants who are older or who have kids to live elsewhere. For instance, if the landlord says something like, "I don't think the building is safe for kids" or "Are you sure you can handle the stairs?" They're probably trying to keep you out.
