Maurice Duruflé's musical tribute to Jehan Alain, a French musician & composer who died in 1940, at the age of 29, in the Battle of Saumur. The battle was one of the last, if not the last, major actions before the Germans entered Paris.

Philippe Lefebvre plays the IV/67/96 instrument installed in the cathedral in 1971. The recording was made in 1981, 4 years before M.Lefebvre became one of the 3 titulaires at Notre Dame de Paris.

  • Yes, what you said is very true, this interpretation is very clear, not fast, but neither slow nor boring. Very interesting, great professionnalism.

  • @cliveso I understand - but look: lets say, this organ has charm - ist not a perfect CC organ ,but ist very special: unperfect -and therfore "charming - " compare it with a charming girl´s face: maybe not perfect -but.....loveley

  • Chartres' north rose and this piece of music played on its organ:

    they both blow you away

    AWESOME

  • I don't like so much Gonzales organs, but I heard already the Chartres one, it sounds like a big organ, stops sound clear, and "disgusting" is a too strong word, really.

Right that a Cavaillé-Coll is much better for symphonic pieces.

The video sound is here not very good, and does not give the real colour of this organ.

  • Five stars for Philippe Lefebvre, but the in my opinion the Chartres organ is disgusting!

  • @choirboyfromhell1

Some organs are tuned at different pitches, etc- it can be off-putting at first! It's also a complete pain to try to get other instrumentalists to accompany such pipe organs...

Whatever the case, this organ has a lovely timbre and Philippe Lefebvre interprets this piece marvellously.

  • Haven't been to the Cathedral to check the tuning (I am sure the people there know what they are doing ;) ) but there are a lot of ways a video could be off-speed on playback.

  • Why is this organ pitched a full step higher than anything else? It's not A=440 for sure...

  • Wow. From 3:35-4:11 he has the voices from the manual and pedal parts (and then some) from the section from 1:42-2:33. I think Durufle was too much of a genius for any of us to understand... there's nobody else like him. Absolutely unbelievable.

    wow.

  • Every time I hear this piece I love it more and more and more! One day I HAVE to learn it!

    :D
