@wolframixx I don't think 1448 were terrible. They made a mistake..yes..BUT having realised they realised they had made a mistake they did their best to correct it. They were explicit and clear in their instruction "We are on an active runway". In thick fog, they missed a turning. That's a bad mistake, but having made it, they did what they could to set it right. The ATC controllers action in clearing an aircraft for takeoff when there was obviously confusion was negligent in my view.

The reason why I feel the atc was more at fault was because she didn't stop anything when A) an incursion had occured and B) YOU HEAR THE PLANE TAKE OFF but you then clear ANOTHER PLANE! If I had heard that I would have freaked out and halted everything. 1448 is at fault for getting confused, but DEAR GOD

Someone buy the crew of US2998 a beer..two planes colliding on a runway had the potential to be an absolutely catastrophic disaster..and was only averted because they are switched on to what was going around them.

Airline pilots are under enormous time pressure..by stopping short of the run away US2998 was essentially taking responsibility for shutting down the runway as no one else could take off or land till he moved and would have made himself very unpopular...great call to stick to his guns
