Obama' Bid to "Wiretap the Internet": Secret Government Backdoor

According to the New York Times, the U. S. government, in a bill to be introduced by the Obama administration, would seek the ability to wiretap the internet.

Of course, it makes sense that the government would want to give the FBI and NSA the legal ability to monitor internet communiqués between terrorists, but isn't this already covered under the Patriot Act? Doesn't the federal government already have sweeping powers to monitor any type of communication of suspected terrorists? Not necessarily.

At issue here is an intelligence agency's ability to gain access to encrypted messages and peer-to-peer file sharing. The FBI, for instance, needs to get permission from an internet service provider to have any suspicious messages unscrambled, which is problematic in a so-called war where time is of the essence. With peer-to-peer networks, terrorist suspects are able to communicate without exposing their identities or secrets on a central server. Research in Motion's Blackberry phones and Facebook, for example, could be tapped if served with a wiretap order.

Forget for a moment that any such wiretap would require a court order: there is the potential that any keyword search, or comments made by text and on Facebook, could precipitate a wiretap order. That's right, be careful that there's no offending words underneath the photographic evidence of last night's drunken debauchery.
