In this video I demonstrate what to do if you see no menus, or cannot get the Unity interface in VirtualBox. Please note, I forgot to mention that you need to have 3D acceleration enabled in VirtualBox, I also gave the machine 128MB of video memory.
Ugh, I just started with Linux and got Ubuntu 11.04 (dual booted). I decided to get a KDE desktop from Synaptic but my computer powered down in the middle of it for god knows what reason. Now I get a weird login and when I go into Ubuntu all I can see is my desktop, I don't get any bar on the top or side to launch apps, show time, etc.
I've worked out ctrl+alt+t gives me the terminal (from which I launched Firefox), but at this point I can do very little in there compared to the proper GUI.
@baillou2 Sorry, I thought you meant Windows with a Ubuntu VM. It sounds like Unity is the real problem, I imagine that you will be able to see the menus if you switch to Gnome 2. The only solution I can think of is disabling the global menu, which you probably wouldn't want to do.
@MarrkDaviid I'm running it on Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit. I can change the size of the window by dragging the edge like always. But I can't get into seamless mode or enable any other options since there is no menu bar options.
Keep in mind this is a virtualbox installation of WinXP IN Ubuntu 11.04, NOT the other way around. I don't ever install Windows directly on my harddrive. In any case the guest OS isn't the problem. I could just create a blank machine and it SHOULD work fine. But it won't.
@baillou2 It sounds like a problem with VirtualBox, have you got the latest version? What platform are you running it on? Have you tried changing the screen resolution within Ubuntu? Sometimes this automatically resizes the VirtualBox window.
i like how you pronounce the 'g' in 'gnome'..

@baillou2 Yeah, they should have had more than three BETA's.

@MarrkDaviid Yeah, it worked fine in gnome 2. I'm hoping that in time there will some tweaks that will fix this problem, along with several others.
I hear there will be a good deal more customization eventually. I don't hate Unity, but it's not quite there yet.
