One of the major activities these days at the Black Star Surf Shop is the making of a documentary "The Black Star Surfers". The documentary is about how learning to surf can be empowering as it can provide a means of making a living. Meanwhile, the surfers more intimate relationship with, and understanding of, their environment and ocean also creates local environmentalism and community activism. This story is about a group of young Ghanaians who are some of the first in their country to surf and how they experience personal growth through a process of economic, environmental, and community empowerment. The film "stars" our very own Frankee, co-owner of Black Star. http://www.blackstarsurfshop.com

  • what does slavery have to do with surfing

  • Hi Jamir,

Thanks for your question. As you know, Ghana has a long history of slavery and was the portal for slaves leaving Africa and going to the new world and Europe.

The point of showing the slave fort, which is very near to where the Black Stars surf , is to show the people can overcome their history as surfing has been empowering (the opposite of slavery) to Frankee and some of the other locals. I hope this makes sense :-)

  • Wow! Of all things to point out on such a poignant documentary. The film was just giving you a background of the history of the area.

  • why do the whites always prefer to look at Africa from the wrong lens. We dont do that about them. Slavery and shop now as nothing in common. Fine, u dont want to see what u ve back home but dont show things u wouldnt of ur home from Ghana
