If i was there in real life, & i didn't run after the ground was cracking, or the ground started rising up & sinking, OR cars getting chucked out of the hole, OR the tripod coming out of the ground, I sure as hell would run when the steam protrudes out of it right before the heat rays are deployed, I would run so fast that I would end up in another dimension.

@LeftoverJedi Its possible! Maybe Martians are a hive mind and individuals mean nothing to them? Perhaps that Martian was just securing the area until it could properly greet the human hive mind!
