Elgar's "Enigma Variations" were played by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a controversial reading by Leonard Bernstein at the Royal Festival Hall, London, on 14 April 1982. In this first part we hear the Theme and Variations Nos 1 - 7.

  • @michaels7 right. Bernstein only errors when he takes that vision too extremly--which is uncommon.

  • Leave it to Lenny to be controversial. His tempos WERE slow here and elsewhere nine times out of ten.

  • I saw this performance and loved it, especially Nimrod. It has made me cry then and now. I believe Leonarrd Bernstein loved Elgar as I do and the English do. Thank you for bringing back this memory.

  • Wow, I loved this performance many years ago on a dg cd. Maybe this will come out

    on a dvd. Too slow? Hardly, when played with this passion and intensity.
