This video is a collaboration between the Plant Endomembrane Research Group at Oxford Brookes University (UK) and the band "Professor Science". We are interested in the function and organisation of the plant secretory pathway and use a lot of confocal laser scanning/electron microscopy to take a closer look at our plant cells. When we discovered David Mansfield's song "Sweet Home Apparatus" online, we thought that the combination between his song about the Golgi apparatus and our Golgi videos obtained on the confocal microscope might make a good music video. This is the result!

  • hey,... just to take notice,..i am not quiet sure if the stacks move on the actin filaments...they should move through microtubuli,...but i am not sure,...just a point to think about maybe

  • @verimack Hi verimack, thanks for your comment! It has been experimentally confirmed that plant Golgi body movement depends on the actin cytoskeleton rather than on microtubules. If you treat plant cells with a drug that destroys the actin filaments, the Golgi bodies stop moving (Boevink et al.,, 1998, Plant Journal). If you get rid of microtubules, Golgi body movement is only slightly changed (Langhans et al., 2009, Protoplasma). Hope this helps! Best wishes, Anne Osterrieder

  • @plantendomembrane it´s me again! thanks a lot! :) now i do know something to maybe impress my prof. with :D

he still arguments that plant golgi body movement depends on microtubules.

  • @verimack Glad I could help and I hope you manage to impress and convince your professor!

Show him the references I cited below if necessary, you should be able to access them if you search for them on pubmed.com. I wanted to link to the PDFs, but YouTube won't let me comment with links!

Let us know how it went. :D Anne
